Players Challenge Rules

Introduction

The Players Challenge
Players Challenge Fantasy Football 2005 puts you in control as owner, general manager and head coach of your very own fantasy football team! As such, you control a $40 million salary budget that you will spend to build a team/lineup of ten (10) pro football players each week of the regular pro football season. Each player will be assigned a value (in dollars or units). However, the total value of your assembled team of ten players cannot exceed the salary cap of $40 million for each week of play. You will accumulate fantasy points based on the statistics your players generate each week. Player values may change during the season based on the player's performance, relative value against other players in the same position and, to some degree, performance expectations. Additional players (such as rookies and reserves) may be added to the player pool as warranted. Rosters will not carry over week to week, so you will need to set a new lineup each week. This puts you in control and maintains a competitive edge for all teams throughout the season, rather than being stuck with a lousy team throughout the season as with most other types of fantasy formats. Prizes will be awarded as listed in the Prizes section below.

Entry Fee
The fee to play Players Challenge is $19.95. The cost to purchase 2 teams is $29.95 (a savings of $10), 3 teams for $39.95 (a savings of $20), 4 teams for $49.95 (a savings of $30). There are no additional costs or transaction fees. Special promotions may at times be offered at Players Challenge's discretion.

Leagues
During registration you will be asked what your favorite pro football team is. This will also be your corresponding league designation. For example, if you selected the Pittsburgh Steelers as your favorite football team your fantasy team will then belong to the Steel Curtain League.

Time Period
Registration for the Game will begin on or about June 17, 2005. The first of the seventeen (17) Players Challenge weeks begins with the first regular-season pro football game, scheduled to be played on Thursday, September 8, 2005. The final week of the Players Challenge regular season ends with the last game of the NFL regular-season to be played on January 1, 2006. All dates are subject to change. All entries, online or otherwise, must be received by September 7, 2005, or if opening day is changed by the NFL then entries must be received the day before opening day of the first game of the football season. Players Challenge takes no responsibility for entries that are misdirected, lost, damaged, incomplete or unpaid for. Players Challenge reserves the right to disqualify any entry form that has been incorrectly completed or is not completely legible. For mailed entries, if offered by Players Challenge, only Players Challenge entry forms or photocopies are allowed. All entries become the property of Players Challenge.

The Game and participation in the Game are subject to the Official Rules, and all applicable federal, state, provincial and local laws. All entries (including online and play-by-mail entries, if instituted) become the property of Players Challenge and will not be returned. As set forth below, Players Challenge reserves the right to limit the number of entries in the Game at any time for any reason. Void where prohibited by law.

The Commissioner
The Players Challenge staff will serve as the Commissioner of the Players Challenge Fantasy Football 2005. They will oversee and enforce the rules and play of Players Challenge and will be responsible for answering questions and resolving any concerns, discrepancies or disputes that arise regarding violations of the rules or anything else that may come up. The Commissioners reserve the right to adjust or modify any rule if such a change is deemed best for all contestants. Email for the commissioner is commissioner@playerschallenge.com.

Weekly Lineup
Note: formation and lineup selections as well as team points results and standings will be made through the "MY CLIPBOARD" feature.

Selecting a Formation
As team owner you have an imaginary bank account of $40 million (also referred to as $40M) to spend on your players. But before selecting your players, each week you must first choose between two formations, each with a unique combination of positions:

Split Back/"I" formation: 1 QB, 3 RB, 2 WR, 2 TE, 1 K, 1 Def/Special Team
Shotgun formation: 1 QB, 2 RB, 4 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Def/Special Team

The Split Back/"I" formation's emphasis is the running game with the occasional short pass. The Shotgun formation's emphasis is the passing game.

Setting Your Lineup/Roster
Each week, after selecting your formation you must then select a player for each position in the lineup (corresponding with the formation you have chosen) from the player pool. Note: a new lineup must be submitted before the weekly deadline regardless if your team is keeping the same formation and players from the prior week. Lineups & Formations will not carry over from week to week. You will have $40 million to spend on your players. The Commissioner will select the pool of available NFL players and assign a value to each. The player pool may change week to week, as may the values of the players, depending on their prior performance and active status. The weekly salary/unit values of the players are determined through statistical and mathematical computations. Although rare, there may be times when the Players Challenge staff will arbitrarily assign a value to a player (ie. A fourth-string rookie making a game start). During the season, no rosters may ever exceed the $40 Million salary cap. You must always have 10 players on your roster.

Players Salaries
As stated above, individual player salaries may adjust and vary throughout the season. Salary adjustments can take the form of increases or decreases from week to week. For example, if San Diego quarterback Drew Brees had a value of $7.6M then has a monster game, throwing for 350 yards, 4 TDs and no interceptions, his value for the following week may go up to $8.4M (note: this is just an example and not representative of how player salaries/values will actually be calculated).

Lineup Setting Deadline
The Players Challenge game will run for 17 weeks, corresponding with the 2005 NFL regular season. Each week runs Tuesday to Monday. The deadline for setting your lineup each week is approximately fifteen before the scheduled start of the first NFL game that week. This means 12:00 Noon ET on Sundays, except during NFL weeks 1 and 13, when the deadline is on Thursday; and NFL weeks 16 and 17, when the deadline is on Saturday. Check the official NFL schedule for start times during those weeks. If you fail to pick a roster for a certain week, you will be awarded zero points for that week and toward your overall total. It is the responsibility of the team owner to submit their selections before the weekly deadlines. Make sure to press the Set Lineup button after selecting your players. If you fail to do this or exit the website without confirming your roster you will have selected no players for that week.

Roster Requirements
The chart below lists roster requirements for each team. You can spend a maximum of $40M to select your roster of NFL players. You will not be allowed to set a lineup that exceeds the $40M salary cap or a lineup that does not meet the roster requirements. All lineup changes made after the lineup deadline will take effect for the games of the next Tuesday-Monday scoring period. You do not have to keep any of the same players week after week. Players Challenge offers you this flexibility. All rosters will be accepted only if all player positions are filled and the team salary does not exceed the $40M cap.

Roster Requirements

Position Split Back/"I" Formation,
# of players
Shotgun Formation,
# of players
Quarterback (QB) 1 1
Running Back (RB) 3 2
Wide Receiver (WR) 2 4
Tight End (TE) 2 1
Kicker (K) 1 1
Defense/Special Teams (DT) 1 1
All Positions 10 10

Note: For players who play more than one position, Players Challenge will determine position eligibility based on the official NFL team roster listing. If a player is listed at one position but then plays another for the week (e.g. a running back plays wide receiver) his statistics at the new position will count for your team. If one of your selected NFL players is injured after the lineup setting deadline, does not play or is not available for any reason, you will not be able to make a change effective for that week.

*** NOTES ***

  • Offensive Scoring (QB, RB, WR, TE) Scoring will be calculated according to the following example: If a QB throws for 200 yards, 2 TDs - rushes for 20 yards, 1 TD - and has 25 yards receiving, his point total for the week would be: 3 TDs = 18 points, 200yds Passing = 8 points, 20yds Rushing = 2 points, 25yds receiving = 2 points; or 30 total points for the week. Please note that, if you have an active QB and an active WR who play for the same NFL team, and your QB throws a touchdown pass to your WR, then you are credited with two touchdowns on the play and you receive 6 points for each touchdown (12 points total). Also, players on your active roster at an offensive position cannot receive individual offensive points for your team when they are on special teams.
  • Defensive / Special Team scores (TDs, Fumble Recoveries, INTs, Safeties or Sacks) Your defense is awarded points when any one of its members generates either a TD, INT, fumble recovery, safety or sack. Your defense also is awarded points for a kickoff or punt return that results in a TD. For instance, if your active defense is the Jets, and Santana Moss returns a punt for a TD, your defense (the Jets) gets 6 points. But in that same situation, a team using Moss as an active WR would NOT be awarded 6 points for the touchdown.
  • Fumbles Lost by an active player on your roster playing offense, special teams or defense will lose 2 points if they turn the ball over to the opposing team at any time during the game. For instance, if you have Santana Moss active at WR and he fumbles the ball away at any time while he is on the field your team will lose 2 points. This includes a fumble lost while returning a kick, punt, interception (if your WR were playing defense) or obviously while on offense at WR.
  • Defensive Points Allowed will take into account ALL the points allowed by the team as a whole. Be aware this includes points scored against the offense (TD from an interception, safeties, etc.) and special teams (punt return for a TD) as well as those scored against the defense.
  • Defensive Touchdowns are any touchdowns scored by the defensive team. This includes fumble returns and interception returns.
  • Special Teams Touchdowns are touchdowns scored by punt returns, kickoff returns or returns of a blocked Field Goal kick or punt.
  • To calculate the Total Yards Allowed, simply add the other team's Total Rushing and Total Passing Yards gained.
  • Rounding will NOT be used when calculating points from statistics. For example 49 yards rushing will result in 4 points. Tie Breakers At the end of each week's games the team with the most overall points (across all league affiliations) wins the weekly prize. In case there is a tie for the weekly prize, the team with the most points for the season thus far wins the weekly prize. If there is still a tie, the current week's points by position in the following order will be used to break the tie - Quarterback, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, Tight End, Kicker, Defensive Team.

Participation by all team owners each and every week is strongly encouraged since the team with the most points over the course of the season (across all team affiliations) wins the grand prize. In case there is a tie for the grand prize, the team that won the most weekly prizes is the winner. If there is still a tie, yearly points by position in the same order as described above will break the tie.

    Results
Weekly, overall and league results and standings will be published by Tuesday morning for the previous week's and up to the previous week's play. Results will also be published in the My Clipboard section.

    Prizes
Chances and odds of winning depend on the number of entries received and the skills of each entrant with regards to strategy and player choices. Prizes are not transferable. Taxes are the sole responsibility of the prize winners.

The participant who accumulates the most points during the 2005 season (across all leagues) will win the $40,000.00 Grand Prize. The grand prize winner, along with two hundred others based on their performance during the regular season play will then compete in the Players Challenge Playoffs. The winner of the Playoffs will win $10,000. Please refer to the Prize Table for all other prizes to be awarded.

    Players Challenge Playoffs
The top 50 overall points leaders and the top 5 league leaders (200 total) will compete in the Playoffs system.

The teams owners will choose from a selection of players whose teams are appearing in the NFL playoffs. Before the first game of the playoffs (wildcard games) the team owners will again choose either the run or pass formation and their roster of 10 players. After this intial selection the rosters will be locked for the rest of the playoffs. So, you want to choose players who are not only going to do well but whose team will go further in the playoffs. But here's the twist: you can only choose a maximum of three (3) players from one NFL team. Hey, we didn't call this Players Challenge for nothing. Remember, if one of your selected player's team loses during the NFL playoffs then that's it for that player. It's up to the rest of your roster to carry you throughout the rest of the playoffs.
In the event there is a first place tie the prize will be split evenly.
